I'm glad you're here
My greatest satisfaction comes from applying my understanding, compassion, and experience to help people reach what they're after. The relationship between therapist and client matters more to the outcome than almost anything else, so it's worth saying plainly what I'm like in a room: warm, curious, direct, with a sense of humor.
Before this, I did other things.
I spent about a decade in entertainment and another decade owning and running restaurants. Those aren't boasts. Along with being a father, they are the life experience that I bring with me.
Entertainment taught me about the importance of dreams vs reality. How hard it can be to set boundaries with work. And how valuable real connections with people are to maintaining happiness. Restaurants taught me what pressure and sacrifice do to people over time. What it looks like when someone is holding a thing together on will alone and when the cost has quietly stopped being worth it.
During the pandemic I lost someone very close to me. It rearranged what I wanted to spend my life doing, and I went back to school to become a therapist.
So when you tell me about your work, your obligations, the machinery of the life you've built, I'm not translating it from a textbook. I come with experience that can help me understand your life.
How I work
I'm trained in EMDR, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, and the Gottman Method. All that to mean: we don't only talk about your patterns, we work with them directly. Most people who find me have already thought about this a great deal. Insight isn't usually what's missing.
I'm curious rather than prescriptive. I'll ask a lot of questions and I won't pretend to have your answers. But I'd rather be useful to you than agreeable, and if I think you're avoiding something, I'll say so.
I find that our work happens best in an atmosphere of safety, intelligence, warmth, and humor.
Who I work with
Individual Adults
I help people bridge the gap between their idealistic inner self and their actual self — a gap that can lead to depression, anxiety, and a lot of negative judgments about oneself. Often that shows up as burnout, or as a growing sense of not recognizing the person doing your life.
Couples
Partners stuck in the same argument, or who've gone quiet with each other, or who are trying to work out what comes next. I also work with people whose relationship is the problem but whose partner won't come in. That work can still happen.
